How harmful they are? What can be done to solve these problems?
Band 9 essay sample
It is an irrefutable fact that exposure to violent television programmes and video games has a negative impact on children. Children who play a lot of violent games or watch violent movies tend to accept violence as a normal part of life. This conviction makes them insensitive, aggressive and apathetic. Limiting their exposure to such games and shows is the most effective way to counter this effect.
Violent games and shows normalize violence. When children regularly watch such programs, they become insensitive to the suffering of others. They have no qualms about hurting hours. They believe such behaviour is normal and acceptable. At school, they start bullying their juniors and peers whom they believe are not as strong as them. As they grow up, they become more aggressive. They do not hesitate to use violence to have their way. This hurts their relationships. There is constant tension between them and their colleagues or spouse. In the long run, their aggression will lead to isolation and take a toll on their health as well.
Children are too immature to distinguish right from wrong. They readily accept what they see on the screen. Hence, parents must constantly shield children from violent media content. They should keep a tab on what children are watching or playing online. In addition, parents should encourage them to get physically active. Playing a sport is a safe way for them to give vent to all the bottled up negative emotions. Physical activity will also keep them emotionally strong and secure.
In short, unsupervised access to the computer and internet will invariably expose children to violent content. Parents must tackle this issue before it goes out of hand by limiting their screen time and encouraging them to make better use of their free time by playing a physical sport or engaging in a mentally stimulating activity like solving puzzles.
