Band 9 essay sample

According to some people, every student should learn science. Others, however, disagree with this view. In my opinion, everyone benefits from scientific knowledge and hence it must be a compulsory part of school curriculums.

On the one hand, some people insist that science should be taught to all students and I fully agree with that view. Science played a crucial role in facilitating man’s journey from the cave to where he is today. Nothing helped our progress more than science. In fact, whatever development we enjoy today is a fruit of science. A decent knowledge of science is essential to benefit from various scientific breakthroughs. For example, knowledge of life sciences helps us live a healthy and happy life. Likewise, knowledge of physics and chemistry is essential to understand various natural phenomena. Learning science at school helps children better understand the world they live in. Without this knowledge, they cannot break the shackles of superstition and live a useful and fulfilling life.

On the other hand, there are people who believe that science should be an optional subject. Part of the reason for this insistence could be the fact that not everybody has the aptitude for science. This is true to a great extent. Some children are more inclined towards other subjects like history, mathematics, arts or literature. They may resent the science lessons in their curriculum. Still, this lack of interest is no justification for making science an optional subject. Advanced science does not have to be taught to school children. It is for specialists and they can pursue it at university. At school, science lessons should be taught with the primary objective of fostering scientific temper in students. They do not have to dig deep into chemistry or physics but they should learn enough to understand their physical world better.

In conclusion, some knowledge of science is essential for all students and hence elementary science should be an integral part of the school curriculum for all students. Of course, advanced science lessons are not for everyone and hence they should not be taught at school.
