How The IELTS Is Scored | IELTS Band Score Descriptors

Your Test Report Form will include your overall band score and your score for each of the four modules of the test. The overall score is the average of the four scores.

The following band score descriptors will give you a basic understanding of what level of English proficiency is required for each band score.

Band score 9

A test taker who receives an overall band score of 9 is an expert user of English. They have complete command of the language. They make hardly any grammar mistakes. They are able to use varied vocabulary. They can write grammatically correct sentences and use cohesive elements effectively. If at all they make mistakes, it is due to carelessness, and not a lack of understanding of grammar rules. In short, their English is fluent, accurate and appropriate.

Band score 8

If you receive an overall band score of 8, you are a very good user. Your command of language is good. You may mistake some mistakes here and there and you may also use certain words and expressions inappropriately. You may have difficulty understanding some things in unfamiliar situations. However, you are able to formulate complex and in-depth arguments.

Band score 7

If you receive an overall band score of 7, you are a good user of English. You have decent command of the language. You can handle complex language with reasonable accuracy. However, you do make mistakes occasionally and you may misunderstand some things.

Band score 6

If your overall band score is 6, you are a competent user. You can understand complex language in situations that are familiar to you. However, in unfamiliar situations, you do make mistakes, use words or phrases inappropriately and misunderstand things.

Band score 5

If your band score is 5, you are a modest user. You can handle basic communications in situations familiar to you. You can understand the overall meaning of written and spoken English. However, you do make many mistakes.

Band score 4

If your band score is 4, you are a limited user. You have difficulty understanding situations and expressing your ideas. Your language proficiency is limited to situations familiar to you.

Band score 3

You are an extremely limited user. You have difficulty following even basic conversations.

Band score 2

You are an intermittent user. Your English proficiency is limited to using a few words to express basic needs. You do not understand even the most simple phrases and syntax.

Band score 1

You are a non-user. You know hardly any English.

Your score is 0 if you do not attempt to answer any tasks.
